Rethink Your Drink – What’s in Our Water Supply And Why You Need Water Filter
In an effort to optimize our environment, the things we ingest and experience daily, we cannot neglect taking a look at our water supply and investing in a quality water filter system.
Why Do We Need Water Filter?
Tap water is treated with a large number of chemicals. This is done in order to kill bacteria and other microorganisms. In addition, it may contain other undesirable contaminants like toxic metal salts, hormones, and pesticides, or it may become contaminated by chemicals or microbes within pipes (e.g. lead, bacteria, protozoa).
Here are a few of the chemicals known to be in tap water and their effects on health:
Chlorine – It is linked to respiratory problems and damaged cells. Long-term effects show memory loss and impaired balance.
Flouride – It is a known neurotoxin and endocrine disrupter. Also, it can be harmful to the thyroid gland. Several countries have banned it with some United States cities getting on board as well.
Lead – This substance is toxic to almost every organ in our bodies, especially children. Lead exposure can result in behavioral problems, learning disabilities, stunted growth, brain damage, and other developmental issues. It has also been linked to autism, reproductive problems for men and women, prostate cancer, cardiovascular and kidney damage.
Mercury – It is toxic to the brain, can cause blindness, nerve damage, impairment of motor functions, weakness, rashes, and memory loss.
PCBs– They are shown to cause cancer and negatively affect the immune, reproductive, nervous, and endocrine systems. These are chemicals that are used for industrial purposes and have been banned but still remain prevalent in our water.
Arsenic – Acute exposure can cause GI symptoms while long-term exposure has been shown to lead to skin, lung, and bladder cancers.
DDT – Though this insecticide was banned in the 1970s, the molecules are able to travel within the atmosphere. It has been declared a cancer risk and has been shown to cause reproductive problems and liver damage in animals.
Herbicides and pesticides – They are shown to damage kidneys, liver, thyroid, cause skin lesions. These are the things used on our food – be sure to wash your produce (I like this fruit and veggie wash– vinegar works too!) and go organic for the “Dirty Dozen”.
Pharmaceuticals, medications, birth control pills have also been found in the water supply of 46 million Americans.
Myth: Boiling water removes toxins.
Fact: Boiling water kills harmful organisms but does nothing to remove toxic chemicals, compounds, salts, and metals.
What can we do?
I know it’s a lot to think about. But when we consider getting to the root of our symptoms or diseases, we have to start at the ground level. In this instance, our water supply – the thing we drink, cook, and bathe with- is imperative to our health.
